Ms. Charnas traces her
interest in theater to her
childhood. She liked creat-
ing back-yard musicals
with the other children in
her Cleveland neighbor-
hood. She went on to par-
ticipate in formal produc-
tions planned specifically
for children and teens.
After college, she
worked in summer stock
and started directing
almost immediately.
"Actors are like pawns
because they can't make a
lot of decisions," explained
the co-author of
Sheboppin', a '60s musical
comedy about four young
women who work in a
beauty shop.
"Directors have an idea
of how they want audi-
ences to respond and gear
everything so that people
will respond in certain
ways. They have control
and get to translate the
mind's visions into reali-
ty."
Aside from reorganizing
and implementing the
musical theater program
7
Back-yard plays
became a life's
work.
at the Boston Conser-
vatory, Ms. Charnas is
caught up with translat-
ing some other visions
from her mind into reali-
ty. She is writing a new
musical based on the life
of singer/actress Ethel
Waters and is starting to
plan Strut II.
When Ms. Charnas, who
is single, wants to get her
mind away from her work,
she still looks to the past,
seeking out flea markets
and antique shows as her
form of recreation.
On the serious side of
her free hours is a com-
mitment to the memory of
the Holocaust and keeping
those images before the
public.
"It worries me that
there are people who say
the Holocaust never hap-
pened," she said. "The wit-
nesses are starting to dis-
appear so we must be wit-
nesses for them."
"The All Night Strut!" is
being performed through
May 22 at the Strand
Theatre in Pontiac. Times
vary, but generally the
show begins at 2 p.m. and
7 p.m. Wednesdays and
Sundays, 5 p.m. and 8
p.m. Saturdays and 8 p.m.
Thursdays and Fridays.
