tbooks, both in short supply.
The conference also ad-
dressed the problem of anti-
Semitism in Ukraine.
Though the government, led
by President Leonid Krav-
chuk, has established good
relations with the Jewish
community, the conference
identified two newspapers
that regularly publish anti-
Semitic articles.

Former Spy
Freed In Israel

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A con-
victed former Soviet spy,
pardoned last month by
President Chaim Herzog
after serving five years in an
Israeli jail, has returned to
Moscow for a short visit, re-
portedly to receive medical
treatment and establish
trade and business contacts
in Russia.
Shabtai Kalmanovitch,
who arrived in Israel as a
new immigrant some years
prior to his arrest, apparent-
ly spied on Israel's contacts
with African countries.
The cover for his espionage
activities had been a suc-
cesful business for import
and export activities bet-
ween Israel and Africa.
Mr. Kalmanovitch was
later convicted on espionage
charges and subsequently
sentenced to nine years' im-
prisonment.
According to media
reports, Mr. Kalmanovitch
had been trained in a KGB
school in the former Soviet
Union and was planted in
Israel as a new immigrant.
The Russian authorities
reportedly pressed Israel to
pardon him, in return for
promises to facilitate the
emigration to Israel of re-
maining Jewish refuseniks,
whose permission to leave
the former Soviet Union has
been withheld for security
reasons.
It is not known whether
any such would-be immi-
grants have so far been
allowed to leave.
Mr. Kalmanovitch's
lawyer, Amnon Zichroni,
who just returned from a
visit to Moscow unrelated to
Mr. Kalmanovitch, said he
had met the former spy in
Moscow and was told about
his plans to set up business
relations with Russian
firms.
