inat is 18-years-old.
Each morning, instead
of rolling out of bed in
a college dorm and heading
for class as her contem-
poraries commonly do in
other parts of the world,
Einat makes for a huge
Merkava tank.
For the rest of the day she
will train young male recruits
in the Israel Defense Forces
(IDF) Armored Corps on the
tank's electrical system. No
stranger to dirt and grease,
this young girl has not only
learned to drive a tank, but to
strip, assemble and fire with
ease the Browning machine
guns the tank carries.
Unusual? Not really. Einat
is typical of today's breed of
the young Israeli woman
soldier, tackling tasks once
thought of as strictly man's
work. In the process, she is
proving that even though
they don't actually fight in
battle, girls can do almost
anything that boys can do.
It might be perceived as
strange, even unfortunate,
that teen-age girls are oblig-
ed to spend time serving in
the armed forces, but that is
not the way most Israeli
youngsters see it. They see
IDF service as a completely
natural rite of passage, a time
to grow and mature before
taking on the responsibilities
of preparing for a career.
Not all Israeli girls serve n
the IDF — about one-third are

exempt on religious or
medical grounds or because
they are married or pregnant
— but the majority spend the
two years after high school
either in the IDF or serving
in some form of national
service.
While 11th-grade young-
sters from other parts of the
world spend much of their
time looking through college
catalogues and considering
study options, Israeli 11th-
graders are listening to lec-
tures and studying pamphlets
on the different types of oc-
cupations available to them
in the IDF. During that year,
each girl will receive her first
army call-up notice and begin
the process of physical and
mental testing which will
help determine where she
will serve.
When the big day arrives,
parents waving goodbye to
their daughters as they board
the bus to basic training
recruit camp are just as teary
and proud as parents else-
where seeing their children
off to college.
Women have served in
Israel's defense forces since
the state was established and
even before that. In the early
pioneering days of Jewish set-
tlement women fought side by
side with men to defend their
homes. But after 1948,
though women were still re-
quired to serve an obligatory
stint just as were men, the
