Ron Furey, Mr. Svoray es-
tablished contacts with neo-
Nazis in Germany between
October 1992 and April
1993.
Mr. Svoray, the son of
Holocaust survivors and a
former Israeli police detec-
tive, volunteered for the pro-
ject and was paid only ex-
penses.
The Wiesenthal Center's
European director, Shimon
Samuels, said his organiza-
tion has been urging Ger-
man authorities for two
years to combat neo-Nazi
videocassettes and other
right-wing activities.
"But they did not react, so
we decided to act on our
own," Mr. Samuels said.
The center's intention in
backing Mr. Svoray was to
point out that the German
authorities "do not take
proper measures."
He also said the project's
findings, which included
recorded interviews and
photos of neo-Nazi activities,
were passed on to the Ger-
man ambassador to the
United States.
Neo-Nazi Reisz said he
thanked Mr. Svoray for the
publicity, "bringing Hitler,
a historical personality, into
every TV screen worldwide.
We couldn't have raised the
money for this."
Mr. Schroeder said the
Israeli journalist has in-
advertently done the neo-
Nazis a service by
overestimating their impor-
tance.
All sources rejected the
possibility that the small
neo-Nazi groups unite
behind one leader, such as
Juchem. Experts said these
organizations compete with
each other and don't want to
unite.
Sources here admit that
occasional contact does exist
between certain sympathetic
policemen and neo-Nazis,
but that such contacts are
expressly forbidden.
"I am convinced that these
policemen make the excep-
tion and when discovered
are removed from office,"
says Eberhard Seidel-
t Pielan, a neo-Nazi expert.
His colleague Mr.
Schroeder also pointed out
that numerous police raids
on neo-Nazis in the last year
were successful and were
surprises, countering claims
of alleged cooperation bet-
ween the two.
A source in Berlin for the
Office for the Protection of
the Constitution insisted the
recent neo-Nazi wave is
over. "The large majority of
Germans will combat any
such new attempts, and suc-
cessfully."
