Those who traveled on the
same bus as Mr. Raider and
his wife, Julie, already have
planned a reunion for June
12.
Many said the trip gave
them a feeling of closeness to
Israel. Allan Hamer, who was
not raised in an observant
household, said the trip in-
stilled a sense of Judaism he
had never experienced before.
Now, he hopes to learn
Hebrew and more about the
Jewish homeland, he said.
"The trip really showed me
firsthand what a Jewish feel-
ing is, a feeling of together-
ness," he said.
Security on Wednesday at
Metropolitan
Airport's

International Terminal was
beefed up, just as it was 10
days ago when the Mission
departed. "Gypsy," a four-
legged member of the airport's
Agricultural Beagle Brigade,
was on call at Customs to sniff
the travelers' luggage for
fruits and other purchases.
The pint-sized canine stuck
its nose into the duffel bag of
a cheerful Judy Elson of
Bloomfield Hills, who said she
brought back a Kiddush cup
for her daughter who is get-
ting married soon.
Federation plans to spon-
sor follow-up activities
throughout the year to build
on the ties created during the
trip. 0

the Jewish community. In
November, he directed his top-
level staff members to partic-
ipate in a JCC ouncil-
sponsored trip to Israel.
Last month, he participat-
ed in the Holocaust memori-
al ceremony at the State
Capitol. And last week, he ad-
dressed the crowd of Miracle
Mission participants at the
airport before departure to
Israel.
"This is all evidence that
Gov. Engler wants to have
open communication and co-
operation with the Jewish
community," Mr. Gad-Harf
said. "This has been a learn-
ing process for him and for us.
I don't think he had much
awareness of the Jewish com-
munity, but now he views us
as one of several groups he
sees as a constituent group in
Michigan."
