F
ormer Fresh Air
Society director Sam
Fisher for years car-
ried with him an
innovative idea.
If Jewish teens from
Israel, Great Britain,
France and North America
could come together each
summer for an educational
experience in a camp-like
setting, leaders would
evolve.
This July, Mr. Fisher's
concept becomes reality as
at least 100 Jewish teens
are scheduled to gather for
35 days at B'nai B'rith's
International Leadership
Study in Israel program.
Mr. Fisher, an Israeli
who left Detroit for
Washington to become the
international director of
BBYO, bills the program as
"training for a new genera-
tion of leaders."
"This will be an educa-
tional seminar that will
incorporate leadership
training with a round-the-
clock Israel and Judaic
learning experience," Mr.
Fisher says.
Cost to run the summer
institute is $265,000.
Underwriters are the Ben
Teitel Charitable Trust in
honor of Detroiters
Jeanette and Oscar Cook,
the Joint Program for
Jewish Education of the
State of Israel-Ministry of
Education and Culture, the
Jewish Agency for Israel,
BBYO and the World
Zionist Organization.
"I see a big difference
among those who go on
organized teen trips to
Israel. Israel is the best
thing we've got going for
us," says Barbara Cook,
who with her husband,
Gerald, is executor of the
Teitel Trust. "It is an
investment in the future
Jewish community. If you
want an instant infusion of
dedication, take teens to
Israel on a good, planned
trip. Our community needs
more trips like this."
There is a charge for
participants, but each teen
.is subsidized. Mr. Fisher
says BBYO is working out
details for endowing the
program. Mr. Cook says he
would consider creating a
Teitel endowment because
his late uncle, for whom
the trust is named,
designed the charitabl
foundation so that stu-
dents in Israel would b
among the beneficiaries.
To be considered for the
program, teens who have
completed their junior year
in high school must demon-
strate leadership potential.
They must be paid mem-
bers of a BBYO chapter,
and names must be sub-
mitted to Mr. Fisher
through the local BBYO
director.
To date, none of the 100
BBYO teens registered is
from metropolitan Detroit. :
Spaces are still available,
and anyone who is a mem-
ber of the organization and
is interested in the pro-
gram should contact
Michigan Regional
Director Arnold Weiner. ❑
