gress. (Rhoda and Jim Tillett,
now divorced, are still col-
leagues in their endeavor, and
they run a silk screen work-
shop together.)
Rhoda Tillett handles the
many details for Arts Alive
Festival, presented three
times a year, when island art-
ists and craftspeople to show
their wares and island musi-
cians perform.
Another major cultural
event, this one four times a
year, is Classics in the
Garden, a series of concerts
featuring talented young
musicians from all over the
world. A number of them
have been Jewish musicians.
Cellist Joseph Feigelson, a
New York soloist, has played
in Tillett Gardens, so has
Gary Levinson, a violinist
with the New York Philhar-
monic. The opening concert of
1993 featured the Russian
piano duo of Svetlana
Gorokhovich and Liliya
Khobotkova.
"They're all the best of the
young, upcoming musicians,"
says Rhoda Tillett, whose
husband Ibm Lorey, a pianist,
does the bookings.
But even if visitors come
when there is no concert or
festival, there is much to see
in Tillett Gardens. Besides
the silk screen studio and
workshops, there are eight
studios, including Virgin
Island Stained Glass, Carib-
bean Enamel Guild, African
Art and Clothing and more.
Here visitors can watch the
artisans at work — on
enamel, clay, stained glass,
porcelain, even dollmaking —
and buy their wares.
Also on the premises are
the El Papagayo Garden
Restaurant, a casual outdoor
eatery; Bishop Woodworking,
Possibly Picasso Children's
Art, and the Young Chang
Piano Studio with its Chang
Concert Grand Piano, pur-
chased entirely by contribu-
tions from the community.
Overseeing it all is Rhoda
Tillett. Tillett Gardens isn't
only her place of work but
also her home; she and Tom
Lorey live in an airy second
level apartment just steps
away from the fountain and
the studios. _
A member of the St.
Thomas Hebrew Congrega-
tion, she's already thinking of
ways to use Tillett Gardens as
the site of cultural events
to celebrate the bicentennial
of this historic congregation.
"I love it!" she says, walk-
ing outside and sitting down
under a tree near the foun-
tain. "The tropical flowers,
the colors — they're still
breathtaking to me. Wher-
ever you look, you see color,
light and a wonderful sky." ❑
