Basketry Show
At Sybaris
The Sybaris Gallery will
mount its Fourth Annual
Basketry Invitational
through May 22.
The show, which is an in-
triguing display of baskets,
celebrates the significance of
the vessel as sculpture. The
24 artists in the invitational
employ a range of materials
and suggest that the con-
straints of traditional form
and construction are not im-
positions. They treat the
basket as a container of
meaning. Maintaining a rev-
erence for the basket's
historical significance, they
elaborate its ancient formal
archetypes in a contemporary
vocabulary.

Dorothy Gill Barnes con-
structs containers which de-
mand attention to the nature
of the material. Ms. Barnes
carefully chooses her twigs,
vines and bark, but breaks
any regulated construction
mold.
Karyl Sisson creates inven-
tive baskets out of miniature
wooden clothespins and wire.
These sculptural forms ele-
vate her materials from their
common household associa-
tions into the realm of an im-
portant artists' medium.
The baskets of Jan
Buckman grow out of the col-
lective memories of her
heritage. They speak of a
culture, of honor, of commit-
ment, of magic, of spirituality.
The diversity continues
with John Garrett, whose
newest work of wire, flat
metal and rivets eschews
classic shapes for geometric
forms. Jeannine Goreski
employs a knotless netting
technique to make small
beaded baskets suggestive of
order and counting. Linda
Kelly's baskets are 7-foot
forms that invoke a surpris-
ing amount of anthropomor-
phism. A basket sculpture in
the shape of a human heart
that seems to pulsate, sug-
gesting life and human emo-
tions is the type of structure
that Joanne Segal Brandford
is known for.
Susie Colquitt, of Mar-
quette, has been exploring
form and color using fabric,
paint and dye for many years.
Sharon Robinson has been
experimenting with many
types of papers, glues and
