Libyan Leader
Challenged

Jerusalem (JTA) — Foreign
Minister Shimon Peres has
challenged Libyan leader
Moammar Qadhaffi to join
the Middle East peace process
and prove his claim that he
has changed his approach to
Israel.
Mr. Peres made the com-
ments in reaction to news re-
ports that Mr. Qadhaffi had
invited former Libyan Jews
in Israel to visit their home
country and was offering com-
pensation for property the
Jews had left behind in Libya.
Mr. Peres added that Israel
would welcome Libyan pil-
grims to Israel's holy places,
just as it would welcome any
Muslim pilgrims from other
parts of the world.
Mr. Qadhaffi's reported
gesture to former Libyan
Jews would parallel moves by
another north African coun-
try, Morocco, which has al-
lowed Israelis of Moroccan
origin to visit the country
without any visas, under the
claim that they were still con-
sidered Moroccan citizens.
The comments by Mr.
Peres and Mr. Qadhafi came
after other reports in the me-
dia that Libya was interested
in joining the multilateral
working groups in the peace
process, but was reluctant to
announce it publicly.
Mr. Peres described as "in-
teresting" several measures
Mr. Qadhaffi has taken re-
cently, which the foreign min-
ister said were designed to
please the United States.

IDF Officer
Is Arrested

Jerusalem (JTA) — An
Israel Defense Force officer
has been arrested on suspi-
cion of taking bribes from
dozens of Arabs to help them
cross into Jordan without go-
ing through routine security
and customs checks.
The lieutenant, who serv-
ed in the Civil Administra-
tion as the deputy com-
mander of the Allenby
Bridge, was arrested last
month.
Police fear that suspects
for crimes and security
violations may have escaped
to Jordan with the officer's
help.
Security forces also an-
nounced that they have un-
covered a network of Israeli
Arabs and Gaza Strip
residents who helped supply
Palestinian gunmen in the
_administered territories.
