Getting a chance to
work again at Tiger
Stadium is almost a
dream come true for
Goldman, 48. He was a
runner for food stands
there for several years
when he was younger and
he sold pizza at a stand
during the 1968 post-sea-
son games.
Now he's overseeing the
stocking of baseball mer-
chandise at the refur-
bished and reborn ball-
park on the historic cor-
ner of Michigan and
Trumbull.
"The sales of sports
merchandise have mush-
roomed in the last 10-12
years," Goldman said.
"It's important that you
offer quality merchandise
because you have a cer-
tain image you want to
convey to the public and
you want your fans to be
proud to wear your items.
"In the past few years,
sports merchandise has
become more and more
high fashion. Men's silk
jackets recently have
become quite popular."

out. "We were one of the
first professional teams to
offer black items when

black wasn't a team color.
I think people like that
color because a team logo
really pops out from it."
Goldman has been in
his current OAI position
since Ilitch purchased
Olympia Stadium Corp.
from ex-Wings owner
Bruce Norris in 1983. He
had held a similar post at
Cobo for four years before
joining OAI.
Cogen's job is to make
sure the work gets out
about events not only at
Joe Louis, but also the
other OAI venues. He's
also in charge of group
ticket sales and customer
service.
"Let's say we have My
Fair Lady at the Fox,"
Cogen said. "You know
your target demographic
group is 35-plus, so you
try to put out advertising
which appeals to this
group and place the
advertising where this
group will see it.
"We also want to make
sure, for example, that
the senior groups at the
Jewish Community Cen-
ter receive a flyer."
Cogen, 35, has been
director of marketing for
OAT since June 1987 and
he added the Wings in
March 1990.
Before coming to
Detroit, the University of
Richmond (Va.) graduate
was marketing sales man-
ager — "the front man" —
for Ringling Brothers
