Farmington Hills, MI 48018 al 0 Knesset Member Cites Rights Abuse Jerusalem (JTA) — Knesset member Dedi Zucker of the left-wing Meretz bloc has sent a report to Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin charging Is- raeli soldiers with human rights abuses in the Gaza Strip. Mr. Zucker present- ) ed Mr. Rabin, who also serves as defense minister, with a firsthand report of the situa- • tion, based on a trip he made • to the Gaza Strip last week. Mr. Zucker decided to inves- tigate personally, after hear- ing rumors of abuses by the Golani Brigade since a gen- eral closure of the territories was imposed three weeks ago. During his visit to Gaza, Mr. Zucker gathered testimo- ny from Gaza residents and said he heard stories of vio- lent and excessive behavior by the brigade during search- es of Palestinian homes. • The Knesset member said the stories should not be ac- ; cepted at face value but should be checked, and that 2 he hoped the army would in- vestigate them. A spokeswoman for The Prime Minister's Office had no comment on Mr. Zucker's report, saying she was not sure it had been received. The Zucker report followed a letter last week also sent to Mr. Rabin by the human rights group, B'Tselem, call- ing for an end to "the arbi- trary illegal acts" committed by soldiers in Gaza during the closure. According to testimony tak- en by the group's field re- searchers, residents were "punched, slapped and/or beaten with clubs by soldiers during house-to-house search- es without any provocation by those beaten." B'Tselem called for a thor- ough investigation of the cas- es reported to its investigators. An army spokesman said charges of abuse during the closure were being reviewed and that a response would be issued this week. Are immutable friendship and eternal peace among all nations' dreams?
