Midrasha Sponsors
Classes, Lectures

Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies will sponsor Rabbi
Rod Glogower's ongoing Tues-
day morning seminar,
"Selected Readings from
Talmud Literature," which
meets 10 a.m.-noon starting
April 20 at the Midrasha,
21550 West 12 Mile Road,
Southfield. This course ex-
plores the world of Talmud
through close textual study.
Although no previous study of
Talmud is required, a reading
knowledge of Hebrew would
be helpful. There is no prere-
quisite for this course.
Rabbi Amy Bigman of Tem-
ple Emanu-El will be the
speaker at a lunch and learn
noon-1:30 p.m. April 22 at
Midrasha as part of the
monthly adult education lec-
ture series co-sponsored by
the Michigan Regional Coun-
cil -of B'nai B'rith, the
Michigan Board of Rabbis,
and Midrasha. Her subject
will be "A Jewish Understan-
ding of the Second Testa-
ment." The program follows
lunch. There is a charge.
Reservations are required.
For a lesser charge, adult
learners may omit lunch and
come just for the program.
To learn more about
Michigan Jewish history, two
bus excursions co-sponsored
by the Jewish Historical
Society of Michigan and
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies in cooperation with
the Jewish Newcomers Group
(a community outreach pro-
ject of the Greater Detroit
Chapter of Hadassah) are
scheduled.
April 25, Dr. Aaron
Lupovitch will lead a bus tour
of Jewish Detroit. The bus
will depart from the Agency
for Jewish Education, 21550
West 12 Mile Road, South-
field, at 12:30 p.m. The bus
will return to the AJE by 4
p.m. There is a charge. Ad-
vance reservations and pre-
payment are required.
May 2, there will be a bus
excursion to the new Michi-
gan Historical Museum in
Lansing. The bus will leave
from the Agency for Jewish
Education at 11 a.m. and will
return by 5:30 p.m. Enroute
to Lansing, Judith Levin Can-
tor, archivist and editor of
Michigan Jewish History, will
speak on "Michigan Jews:
Pioneer Entrepreneurs on the
Two Peninsulas." At the
museum in Lansing, a brown-
bag lunch in the museum lun-
chroom will be followed by a
docent-led tour. There is a

charge. Advance reservations
and pre-payment are
required.
Midrasha will offer a four-
week text class for adults on
the subject of Jewish ethical
literature starting April 28.
The course is titled, "Life As
An Art Form: An Invitation
to Jewish Ethical Literature"
and will be taught by Dr. Irv-
ing Panush, professor of
humanities at Oakland Com-
munity College.
Midrasha will present the
course at two different times
and in two different formats:
(1) as a lunch and learn, from
noon-1:30 p.m. at the Max M.
Fisher Building, 6735
Telegraph Road, Bloomfield
Hills; and (2) 7:30-9 p.m. at
the Midrasha. Both versions
of the course will meet on four
consecutive Wednesdays:
April 28, May 5, 12 and 19.
There is a charge.

At Butzel Center

The Sholem Aleichem Insti-
tute will host • its annual
Tamarack weekend at the
Butzel Center in Ortonville
April 30-May 2. The speaker
for the weekend will be Sabell
Bender, director of the
Oakwood School and Theater
in California. A Yiddush per-
former and educator, Ms.
Bender will conduct work-
shops that explore the history
and content of Yiddish
Theater.
