He's not only a jewelry ex-
pert; he often doubles as un-
official tour guide, leading
Jewish customers up the hill
to St. Thomas' historic syna-
gogue. "Just the other day, I
took some tourists from South
Africa to the synagogue," said
Mr. Jesner, a member of the
congregation. "It's a 60-
second walk from here, and if
they ask about the syna-
gogue, I offer to escort them."
Of course, he'll also offer to
show them jewelry: precious
and semi-precious stones,
watches, and whole trays of
14-karat gold Chais and Stars
of David made in Italy, Israel
and elsewhere.
This, too, is a family
business. It was begun in
1963 by Mr. Jesner's parents
and brother, who started out
in a more modest location on
Main Street and moved to the
present site in 1974.
"It was once a Danish
warehouse," explained Mr.
Jesner, who runs the business
with his wife, Laurie. "The
Danes lived upstairs, had the
warehouse downstairs, and in
one area, they had a complete
working kitchen with a sepa-
rate area for cooking."
He led the way past the
front of the store to the mid-
dle section, the cashier's area.
Here, the cash register was on
a counter — but behind it
were stone walls. The stones,
explained Mr. Jesner, were
brought from Denmark as
ballast for the ships when the
island was Danish-owned.
Gleaming copper pots were
hanging on hooks behind the
cash register — all part of the
careful restoration that the
Jesners undertook.
Looking at jewelry in a
former Danish warehouse,
sniffing famous fragrances,
admiring Gottex swimwear —
the afternoon went so quick-
ly that I only had time to visit
three stores. But they were
enough to prove that a
Jewish-style shopping spree
in St. Thomas can be quite an
adventure.

has become the first Jew in
50 years to be appointed to
the nation's Cabinet.
President F.W. de Klerk
announced that Louis Shill,
62, will take office June 1 as
minister of national housing
and public works.
