tured over the weekend,
while a gang of 18 others
was arrested last week. The
group reportedly had
planned to set off a bomb be-
neath a crowded shopping
center in Tel Aviv.
Several weapons caches
have also been found since
the closure two weeks ago.
At the same time, police
are investigating a series of
incidents in Hebron involv-
ing an extremist Jewish
youth group that organized a
self-described self-defense
course for about 60 youths
from around the country.
Over the weekend, the
group allegedly threw stones
at Arab homes and cars,
damaged stores in the Arab
market and beat store
owners.

Orchestra Gets
Vienna Welcome

/ Vienna (JTA) — The Israel

Philharmonic Orchestra got
an especially warm recep-
tion last week at a concert
here, symbolizing the new
chapter in Israeli-Austrian
relations in the post-
Waldheim era.
Standing ovations greeted
the orchestra, under the
) baton of lifetime conductor
Zubin Mehta.
The concert was attended
by a constellation of promi-
nent figures, all underlining
> the importance the two
countries place on being
i brought together.
Thomas Klestil, Austria's
new president, and Helmut
Zilk, mayor of Vienna, were
concert patrons. This was
, made possible only after the
' retirement of former Presi-
dent Kurt Waldheim, whose
Nazi past had cooled the two
countries' diplomatic ties to
almost nil.
Much has changed since
last June, when Mr. Klestil
> was elected to the presiden-
cy.
Half a year ago, a Circle of
Friends of the Israel
Philharmonic Orchestra was
founded in Vienna at the in-
itiative of active Jewish
> community members Edith
Rosenberg and Nora Frankl.
The group was able to woo
Baroness Lotte Tobisch von
Labotyn, who manages the
annual Vienna Opera Ball,
to be its honorary president.
), Baroness Von Labotyn has
' long been an active friend of
) Israel.

The Austrian celebrities
present at the concert also
took part in a fund-raising
dinner gala for the or-
chestra, which took place at
the City Hall under Mayor
Zilk's auspices.
