the day:
"David told me, 'I don't
want to be your father. I
just want to be your
friend.' "
And friends they
became.
Special friendships are
never easy to maintain,
however, and Mr.
Swimmer readily admits
that a weekly commitment
of four hours presents
challenges. Sometimes he
works late at his business
in Franklin, Emerald
Landscape and Design. On
these days he must phone
Philippe in order to post-
pone their meetings.
Occasionally, the two
friends disagree about the
value of homework.
Philippe, who can think of
things he'd enjoy more,
nevertheless studies dur-
ing part of his time with
Mr. Swimmer.
"We agree that we don't
have to see eye-to-eye and
that we're entitled to our
own opinions,"
M
Swimmer said.
So they compromise. ,
After hitting the books,
they hit the arcades.
The duo has partiticpated
in each other's simchas,
too. Philippe attended Mr.
Swimmer's wedding, and \
Mr. Swimmer sat on the
bimah during Philippe's
bar mitzvah at Temple Kol
Ami last March.
Mr. Swimmer hasn't
stuck to JFS's required
one-year time commitment
— He has more than dou-
bled it.
"I can see Philippe as
part of my life when my
wife and I have children —
when he's driving a car,"
said Mr. Swimmer. "He's
grown up with me as much
as I've grown up with
him."
