Richard Tucker
At Xochipilli
Xochipilli Gallery of Birming-
ham will host a solo exhibi-
tion of recent sculpture by
Richard Tucker through May
1.
A Michigan resident, Rich-
ard Tucker trained and has
taught at Eastern Michigan
University in Ypsilanti.
Featured in this exhibit are
pieces which demonstrate Mr.
Tucker's ability with steel. In
the 1980s, the artist worked
particularly with thin-walled
concrete over armatures deal-
ing with buildings, furniture
and vehicles. Currently, Mr.
Tucker's energetic work ex-
plores the figure. Avoiding
formal poses, the figures kick
or propel themselves from the
wall or floor. In Boy, a figure
hangs upside-down from the
wall, waving its arm and ap-
pearing as if it were an im-
mense gargoyle with a gaping
mouth. Walk in Jerusalem is
a robed figure in steel whose
surface is patterned by in-
tricately cut motifs.. Move-
ment is implied by a gate
hinge welded to its shank.
Xochipilli Gallery is located
at 568 N. Woodward Avenue,
Birmingham. Gallery hours
