New Job For
Dennis Ross

The Washington Institute for
Near East Policy, the pro-Is-
/ rael think tank, is about to
get a new executive director
with a top pedigree.
Dennis Ross, the State De-
partment's policy planning
chief during the Bush ad-
ministration and a principal
architect of the current
Mideast peace process, will
take over the top slot from
Martin Indyk, who ran the
institute since its creation.
Mr. Indyk, of course, is now
the Mideast specialist at the
National Security Council
and special adviser to the
president. The post will make
him a major player in the on-
going peace talks, which are
due to resume later this
month in Washington. The
Washington Institute for
Near East Policy, the pro-Is-
rael think tank, is about to
get a new executive director
with a top pedigree.
Mr. Ross, who is finishing
a temporary assignment as
consultant to the State De-
partment on the Mideast
peace process, is no stranger
to the Washington Institute.
In fact, as an Institute fellow,
he wrote the first of the
group's highly respected "pol-
icy papers" series.
The institute's board of di-
rectors still must approve Mr.
Ross's appointment.

While Jewish philanthropist
Julius Rosenwald (1862-
1932) aided Jewish immi-
grants from Russia, assisted
in the establishment of
agriculture in Palestine and
gave money to the Univer-
sity of Chicago, he was best
known for his assistance to
American blacks.
