WHAT IS P'TACH?

Parents for Torah for All Children.
"P'TACH," is- a national non-profit
organization which provides secular and
Jewish education for children with learning
disabilities who are enrolled in our schools.
Before P'TACH existed, the doors of
almost all day schools were indeed closed
to children with all levels of learning
disabilities, and the parents of these special
children were ofterf frustrated by a
community that failed to recognize the need
for providing special educational programs
in our schools. Now, through P'TACH, the
doors of our schools are "OPEN" to all
our children.

Nuclear Facility
Declared Safe

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Envi-
ronment Minister Yossi
Sarid has given the Negev
Nuclear Research Center in
Dimona a clean bill of envi-
ronmental health.
After what he termed the
first official visit to the top-
secret installation by a
minister — apparently apart
from visits by the defense
minister — Mr. Sarid said
that the center and nuclear
reactor meet international
safety requirements.
Mr. Sarid's visit was aim-
ed at calming public fears
after it became known that
radioactive waste was being
buried at the site, the only
disposal site for radioactive
waste in the country.
. "The site was checked
with environmental,
geographic, geological and
safety considerations in
mind and was found to be
perfectly suitable for its
task.
"It also meets interna-
tional safety requirements,"
Mr. Sarid said. He did not
discuss details of the
transportation of radioactive
materials to the site or their
burial.
The Dimona facility is
commonly reported as the
site of Israel's top-secret
nuclear weapons program.
During his visit, Mr. Sarid
said the ministry would
monitor the area close to the
center, which is closed ex-
cept to those with high-level
security clearance.
In addition, results from
testing by the nuclear
center's staff on air, water,
soil and vegetation . samples
from within the compound
would be made available to
ministry officials on a per-
manent basis.
Anti-nuclear campaigners
admitted Mr_ Sarid's visit is
a step in the right direction
but insisted it does not go far
enough.
Jerusalem lawyer Richard
Laster petitioned the High
Court of Justice on behalf of
eight people suing the
government because of
death or ill-health due to
work conditions at nuclear
centers.
But the petition failed to
reverse regulations placing
the nuclear research centers
at Dimona and Nahal Sorek
outside the Environment
Ministry's jurisdiction.

The Nahal Sorek facility,
on the coast south of Tel
Aviv, carries out research
and irradiation for medical
purposes.

The Michigan branch, P'TACH of
Michigan, Inc., was founded in May of
1979 by a group of parents, lay people and
professionals in fields related to special
education. Our main objective is to provide
special education for learning disabled
children with the goal of mainstreaming
them into regular classrooms whenever
possible. Today, P'TACH has grown to
serve over twenty children in its two
programs. Unfortunately, due to a lack of
financial resources, children are currently
on a waiting list to enter P'TACH's
programs.
