ism," said teacher Ed-
ward Codish. "The boys
receive a more intense,
traditional education in
Gemarah...They are being
prepared for study in a
higher yeshiva.
"I think we are prepar-
ing women for a world
somewhat more liberal
than the world that ex-
ists, but at the same time
making sure that they
will fit into the world that
does exist," he said.
Mr. Codish believes
that all boys need not
prepare for study in a
yeshiva. Perhaps boys
should have the option of
taking courses tradition-
ally given to girls, he
said.
Rabbi Shimansky said
girls are actually getting
a better education than
the boys. The boys con-
centrate heavily on
Gemarah to prepare them
for study in yeshivot.
This is sometimes at the
expense of a more well-
rounded education.
"The goal of the school
is for every student to
learn in a yeshiva in
Israel," he said. "Both
(sexes) are being pre-
pared for future study in
Israel." ❑

Groups Call For
Ordeal To End
Chicago (JTA) — Ukrainians
and Jews here have called
for a swift end to the seven-
year case involving John
Demjanjuk, the accused
Nazi war criminal who is
awaiting an appeal of a
death sentence meted out by
an Israeli court.
The Ukrainian-Jewish
Dialogue of Chicago recently
issued a statement saying
that, while the two groups
disagree about the ad-
ministration of justice in Mr.
Demjanjuk's case, "we agree
that it is in the interest of all
concerned for Israel's High
Court of Justice and the
United States Court of Ap-
peals for the Sixth Circuit,
two respected tribunals now
reviewing the evidence, to
make every effort to resolve
this matter expeditiously."
Mr. Demjanjuk, a
Cleveland auto worker
originally from Ukraine,
was extradited to Israel in
1986.
