Our Great Loss Must Be Remembered

27th NISAN — YIZKOR DAY

DOLBY PRO-LOGIC MOUND SOUND

DESIGNATED BY THE STATE OF ISRAEL

from slavery to freedom, from
sorrow to joy, and from
mourning to festive day.
...Let us, then, recite before
Him a new song..." This
phrase 'new song' appears in
the feminine form, shirah
chadasha.
In other parts of the Hag-
gadah, though, the masculine
form is used, why? Rabbi Jo-
) seph B. Soloveitchik, my
rebbe and mentor, suggests
that it depends upon the man-
\, ner in which our freedom is
/- achieved.
A woman who has a baby is
freed from her labor pains
with the birth of her child, but
to reach this peak of freedom,
she first must endure the
pangs of childbirth.
Therefore, suggests Rabbi
Soloveichik, when the Hag-
gadah uses the feminine form
> for a new song it refers to the
freedom born of great pain,
since the initial redemption
of the Jews took place only af-
> ter long years of suffering at
the hands of the Egyptians.
But the masculine new song
appears in a passage focusing
) on our future redemption,
when we may again bring the
paschal lamb in Jerusalem.
This idea can be taken a
step further. The Holy Zohar,
\-, the mystical interpretation of
the Bible, sees the male as an
active force, and the female
as a passive force. In Egypt,
%- God redeemed us through His
miraculous intervention. God
was the active, masculine
\, force, and we, the Jewish peo-
ple, were the passive, femi-
nine force. And so our "new
song" at that time is in the
) feminine, but in regard to our
future redemption, we sing a
song in the masculine form,
> suggesting that our future
' role must be more active. Ul-
timately a mature Israel must
take redemption into its own
hands, and bring it about
through human initiative and
pursuit.
With this in mind, it may
%- be easier to understand Rab-
bi Yehoshua's position. The
four biblical expressions of
freedom speak of what God
promises to do for us; the but-
ler's dream pictures his — the
butler's -:— acts of initiative
and service.
Our redemption this time
around — as the State of Is-
rael proves — depends upon
our own actions of initiative.
Only after we begin the
process of purification and
freedom can we depend on
help from the Almighty. 0
