New York (JTA) — This year
in Moscow, Zagreb, and
Havana, doors will be open-
ed for Elijah.
Yet before the seder,
residents in those cities
must obtain kosher wine and
food — much of it supplied,
as in past years, by the
American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee, the
National Conference on
Soviet Jewry and the New
York-based Appeal of Cons-
cience Foundation.
The JDC and La
Benevolencia, the Sarajevo
Jewish aid society, will stock
public seders for refugees in
Zagreb and Belgrade in the
former Yugoslavia.
A JDC-sponsored rab-
binical student from Israel
has arrived in Belgrade to
teach about Passover and
help lead the seders. JDC
will provide its customary
Passover food kits to over
20,000 Eastern European
Jews in the former Soviet
Union, Estonia, Poland,
Hungary and the Czech and
Slovak republics. Nearly
25,000 Haggadot will be
distributed, as well.
The National Conference
on Soviet Jewry, through its
Operation Lifeline, has
shipped Passover supplies to
the St. Petersburg Jewish
University for a seder for an
anticipated 500 participants.
Provisions were also sent
to Kiev in Ukraine and
Dushanbe in Tajikistan.
Jewish communities in
Kiev, Moscow and St.
Petersburg will receive
nearly three tons of Passover
supplies, including kosher-
for-Passover gefilte fish,
matzah-ball soup mix, sar-
dines, macaroons, tea bags
and coffee, provided by the
Appeal of Conscience Foun-
dation and Manhattan's
Park East Synagogue.
This is the first year since
direct Passover shipments
were started in 1988 that the
foundation will not include
matzahs in the packages go-
ing to Russia.
The major Jewish corn-
munities in Russia now have
facilities for baking their
own matzah.
The foundation also sent
Cuba's 1,200 Jews some 700
pounds of supplies for their
celebration. The Passover
supplies have been sent
since 1988, when Cuban
President Fidel Castro and
the U.S. government gave
Schneier a special exemp-
tion from the existing trade
embargo between the two
countries.
