For Independence Day
The Gevatron troupe.
The Israeli troupe Gevatron
will appear in concert 9:30
p.m. May 15 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center as part of the com-
munity-wide celebration of
Israel's 45th anniversary of
independence.
Comprised of 18 singers
and musicians from Kibbutz
Geva, Gevatron performs
Chasidic, Russian, Ukrain-
ian, traditional Jewish and
original songs in its con-
certs.
Children of Geva's
founders, the members of
the troupe work by day in
the kibbutz factories, fields,
fishponds and schools and
perform throughout the
country at night.

The Israel Independence
Day celebration will be
kicked off with the annual
Israel Quiz Bowl on May 2,
when area Hebrew school
students compete for prizes.
A Yom Hazikaron (Israel
Remembrance Day) memor-
ial ceremony for Israel's
fallen soldiers will take
place May 13.
On May 16, thousands
will march in the Walk for
Israel, which sets off from
the Maple-Drake JCC at
11:30 a.m. Following the
walk, there will be family
activities, including an
Israeli street fair. Craft
booths, Israeli dancing and
young family programming
on Israel will be coordinated
by Jewish Experiences For
Families.
Bus transportation will
be available for a nominal
charge from the Jimmy
Prentis Morris Jewish
Community Center in Oak
Park.
The celebration will con-
clude with a Jerusalem Day
program May 23 at the
United Hebrew Schools
Building. Geared for high
school and college students,
the event will feature a
"sing-down" song contest,
Israeli dancing, pizza party
and exhibits about study-in-
Israel programs.

Support Group
At Temple Israel
Temple Israel is offering
members of the Jewish
community who are physi-
cally challenged an eight-
week support group. This
group will offer participants
the opportunity to socialize
and meet one another, as
well as to discuss issues of
importance. Each week, the
group will focus on a differ-
ent concern such as travel
for the disabled, energy con-
servation and work simpli-
fication, the Americans
with Disability Act, rela-
tionships, exercise and
nutrition, loss and grief.
The group will be facili-
tated by psychologist Joy
Sherman and Anita
Haenick, a counselor and
physical therapist. The
group will meet 7:30-9 p.m.
April 20, 27, May 4, 11, 18,
June 1, 8, 15.

Women Host
Joint Program
The annual joint program of
the League Of Jewish
Women's Organizations and
the League of Catholic
Women will be held 12:30
p.m. April 29 at the Focus:
HOPE facilities, 1550
Oakman Boulevard, Det-
roit.
The Rev. William Cun-
ningham, executive direc-
tor, and Eleanor Josaites,
associate director, co-
founders of Focus: HOPE,
will be the speakers of the
afternoon. Following the
program, there will be a
tour of the facilities.
There is a donation for
the dessert reception that
precedes the program.
Buses will be available
for transportation to and
from Focus: HOPE at a

Memorial Concert, "A
Musical Trialogue," will
be held 7:30 p.m. April 18
at Temple Israel. Mus-
lims, Jews and Chris-
tians will raise their voic-
es in song under one roof.
Featured will be a
Catholic-Lutheran joint
choir, the Catholic-Luth-
eran Connection Through
Christian Choral Music.
Participating will be the
music ministries of
Beautiful Savior Luth-
eran Church in Bloom-
field Hills, St. John
Neumann Church of
Canton, and the Cathe-
dral of the Most Blessed
Sacrament in Detroit,
Intro To Yiddish
At Shir Shalom
A new, eight-week "Intro-
duction to Yiddish" class will
be offered at Temple Shir
Shalom, 7:30 - 8:30 p.m.
Thursdays starting April 22.
The course, taught by
Rabbi Ahron Davidson, will
provide an introduction to
the Yiddish language, both
written and spoken, for stu-
dents with no prior back-
ground. There is a charge.
The class is co-sponsored
by Temple Shir Shalom and
Midrasha College of Jewish
Studies. Advance registra-

portion of the program

Sephardic version of
Kabbalat Shabbat. The
music will illustrate the
joy that the arrival of the
Sabbath should inspire
and includes . selections of
the Western Sephardim,
those Jews from Spain,
Portugal, France, Moroc-
co, Yugoslavia, Turkey,
Italy and the Nether-
lands. Cantor Naluai is
with Congregation B'nai
Israel in Sacramento,
Calif., where he is also
the dean of the
Sacramento Chapter of
the American Guild of
Organists. Also ,partici-
pating will be the Temple
Israel Choir, directed by
Ellen Duncan, and the
Temple's Choral Group,
directed by Elaine
Greenberg. Accompanist
is Zina Shaykhet.
