In recent weeks, the cam-
paign became more rancorous.
Ms. Pressberg and APN co-
chair Letty Cottin Pogrebin,
the author of Deborah, Golda
and Me, were the targets of in-
tensely personal attacks that
challenged their commitment
to Israel and to the Jewish peo-
ple, as well as APN's positions.
The Presidents Conference
membership settled the mat-
ter and voted to accept APN's
membership application. But
10 organizations voted against
APN, and another eight ab-
stained; the American Jewish
Committee and the American
Israel Public Affairs Commit-
tee (AIPAC) unsuccessfully at-
tempted to have the decision
/ postponed pending additional
study, and to have additional
conditions attached to APN's
) membership.
Clearly, the aggressive lob-
bying effort against APN's ap-
• plication had produced some
• results.
The anti-APN effort demon-
strated the ability of a small,
highly focused cadre of ac-
tivists to use intimations of dis-
loyalty to affect Jewish
communal activity. "The vote
surprised a lot of people, be-
cause they thought it would be
/- closer on the basis of all the
( ruckus that's been raised," said
the leader of one Jewish group
) that voted in favor of the APN
application.
"They pushed some real fear
buttons," said Gail Pressberg
> after the vote. "They went far
beyond the bounds of reason-
! able debate — but they orga-
nized well, and they produced
quite an outpouring of letters
and calls."
The rancor of the campaign
> reflected a trend in Jewish life
that seems to be accelerating,
now that the Rabin govern-
ment has broken some old
taboos, like the prohibition
against even discussing "land
for peace."
"There is something going on
in our community," said Abra-
ham Foxman, executive direc-
tor of the Anti-Defamation
League. ADL voted for the
APN application — despite the
fact that Mr. Foxman's orga-
nization generally promotes a
much tougher line on Mideast
politics.
"There is a greater intoler-
ance of different points of view
on our community," he said.
"This is the second time re-
cently that I have been born-
? barded on an issue. It troubles
me, the kind of very unfriend-
ly, hostile mail I have gotten
) on this — what I call'
`Jewish hate mail.' "
Mr. Foxman emphasized
that some of the calls he re-
ceived reflected a sincere, well-
thought-out concern about the
