assover Brought
o Somalia Troops

Jew-
an Francisco (JTA)
sh soldiers in Somalia will
have a spartan Passover, but
abbi Richard White has
st arrived there to make it
as joyous a festival as possi-
ble.
The 53-year-old Army
haplain left Fort Mon-
mouth, N.J., last week for
Fort Drum, N.Y., and from
there to Africa.
But the shipment of
Passover supplies sent last
month by the Jewish Wel-
fare Board's Chaplains
Council apparently will not
be in Somalia to greet him.
"Nobody knows where it
is," Rabbi White said three
days before departure from
the Chaplain Center and
chool at Fort Monmouth,
where he is a course
designer.
"When you ship stuff to
at part of the world, it
sometimes vanishes en
route. Maybe it will arrive
before I get there but I can't
:ount on that. And they
can't send more because it
wouldn't arrive in time."

After learning that the
supplies were lost, Rabbi
David Lapp, director of the
Chaplains Council, per-
sonally delivered additional
Passover supplies to Rabbi
White before his departure.
Rabbi White, a Reform
rabbi who holds the rank of
major, will be bringing with
him as many Haggadot and
as much Passover wine,
matzah, horseradish roots
and other necessities as he
could stuff in his trunk.
Whatever he could not br-
ing, such as charoset, he said
he'd somehow create himself
by scrounging through the
raw materials from military
supplies in Mogadishu.
The U.S. military has not
sent a Jewish chaplain to
Somalia since Rabbi Joel
Newman returned to the
Marines' Camp Pendleton in
Southern California at the
end of February.

An emotion ceases to be a
passion as soon as we form a

clear and distinct idea of it.
