NEW MENU! scarred by war and scorned by its neighbors, where security is a high-price ticket, Mr. Mehta is not about to sound off about fun- ding concerns. "We recog- d nize that we are not on top of the list of major donors," says Zubin Mehta, "that there are other problems uch more important than ours. "We know our place — but we still need help." Not that the IPO is send- ing out an SOS for talent. Attracting topnotch musi- cians is "no problem," says Zubin Mehta. The recent wave of Russian emigres has flooded the market with tal- ented players. But the IPO is not without its troubles. For example, the mere mention of corn- poser Richard Wagner's name makes some Israelis lose their composure. "It is not an intellectual discussion," says the IPO's conductor of the emotional reaction generated ) whenever the prospect of performing music by Adolf Hitler's favorite composer is raised. Yet, Mr. Mehta has "no regrets" in broaching the subject some time ago. "We would never have known the I\ real feelings" of Israelis had not the topic been brought up to begin with, he says. Several seasons back, the IPO took the measure of how Israelis felt on the topic by floating trial balloons about performing Wagner works. > Holocaust survivors and others reacted strenuously, and the impassioned public feedback — in the press and in letters and calls directly to the IPO — convinced the orchestra not to offer Wagner on its musical menu. For a professional musi- cian such as Zubin Mehta, bowing to the public's opi- nion amounts to a restrain- ing order. "As a musician, it is upsetting," acknowledges Mr. Mehta. "But as a friend of Israel and Jews, I can understand it." Zubin Mehta understands the Israeli psyche, even if he was not born in the Jewish \, state. "I am a friendly out- „) sider, ,, says Mr. Mehta of his longstanding role in the Israeli community. "I' am ) viewed as an outsider with great affection.” Inside the music industry, Mr. Mehta is described as one of the more colorful and talented conductors. "I have always been a friend of Israel," says the IPO's music director for life. ❑ WIN A WEEKEND AT THE BEAUTIFUL TOWNSEND HOTEL Im Whatever occasion you're planning, we'll customize 'Lill our I anquet services to meet yc air needs and budget.
