Amsterdam (JTA) — The
new Dutch foreign minister,
Pieter Kooymans, has ex-
pressed Holland's support
for both a secure Israel and
Palestinian self-
determination.
Mr. Kooymans, who was
speaking this week to a con-
gress of the European
Zionist Council, also said
Europe will show that "it is
prepared to supply financial
and economic support" to
help the Middle East peace
process.
He said the Netherlands
attaches "importance to the
continuation of the bilateral
Israel-Palestinian talks in
Washington, but also to the
multilateral Middle East
Peace talks."
Mr. Kooymans foresaw
that European countries
would be able to contribute
to the multilateral discus-
sions.
The minister affirmed
Holland's support for a
strong and prosperous
Israel, but also noted Dutch
backing for Palestinian self-
determination.
The Zionist congress ad-
dressed by Mr. Kooymans
included the participation of
more than 100 delegates
from 12 different European
countries.
In addition to members of
the executives of the various
Zionist federations, the con-
gress also included members
of Jewish youth and student
organizations.
The conference took place
at the initiative of the Euro-
pean Zionist Congress
chairman, Stephen Roth of
London, and the executive of
the World Zionist Organiza-
tion in Jerusalem.
The last European Zionist
Congress conference was
held four years ago in
Geneva.
Mr. Roth recalled that the
Dutch Embassy in Moscow
for many years facilitated
the process of Jewish
emigration from the Soviet
Union, at a time when the
Soviet Union did not have
diplomatic relations with
Israel.
Mr. Roth noted that
despite the opening up of the
former Eastern bloc, a
Zionist federation had been
established in only one of
those countries, Hungary.
Mr. Roth expressed hope
that more countries would
follow Hungary's example.
He stressed the need for a
common European Zionist
forum to present Zionist
viewpoints.
