Among these ruminations:
• In the Wall Street Jour-
nal, free-lancer Steven Emer-
son maintains that terrorists'
decisions to use the U.S. as
"a pit-stop or haven" means
this country "is taking on a
role once held solely by Eu-
rope..."
While "freedom of speech
and religion are basic tents
for the U.S.," he writes,
"there are some steps we can
take here."
He argues that Americans
"get serious about enforcing
civil laws allow denial of en-
try to the U.S. or expulsion
of noncitizens who have giv-
en 'material support' or funds
to any terrorist organiza-
tion."
• In an editorial, the For-
ward claimed, "Once a gov-
ernment starts fighting back
[against terrorism], it gets
lectured on civil rights and
the roots of terror."
Noting sustained terror
against Israel, Turkey,
France, Britain, Egypt, and
Peru, the Forward mused, "It
is almost unimaginable what
it would be like in America
were our country brought un-
der attack on a similar scale.
Would we and our code of civ-
il liberties bear up as well as
some of our friends and allies
over the years?"
• In a column in U.S.
News & World Report, the
magazine's editor-in-chief,
Mortimer Zuckerman warns
that "not only Israel, but the
whole West faces the menace
of random violence and the
crimes that fanaticism can
produce... We are in for a
long struggle not amenable
to reasoned dialogue. We will
need to nurture our own faith
and resolution."
