American Jewish Organiza-
tions worked the crowd re-
lentlessly, seeking to
influence the Conference of
Presidents when it makes its
decision at the end of the
month.
Morton Klein, a Zionist Or-
ganization of America leader
from Philadelphia, led the
anti-APN charge.
"I've talked to more than
100 people here," he said in
what might have been a case
of understatement. "I don't
think I encountered anybody
who was happy about Peace
Now's application for mem-
bership, or about its presi-
dent, Gail Pressberg."
Ms. Pressberg, whom Mr.
Klein has said has an anti-Is-
rael bias, suggested that the
new emphasis on the peace
process at the AIPAC gather-
ing validated the legitimacy
of her group.
"AIPAC is saying the same
things we were saying two
years ago," she said. "This
clearly demonstrates that
we're in the political main-
stream." ❑
Community
Gets Converts
Toronto (JTA) — Cuba's tiny
community of 1,000 Jews is
experiencing a
"renaissance" as the Com-
munist regime wanes, ac-
cording to a frequent visitor
to the island.
"There is a miracle hap-
pening there. Jews are com-
ing back to Judaism," said
Edmond Lipsitz, formerly
executive director of the
Canadian Jewish Congress,
Ontario region, who recently
returned from an eight-day
trip, his fifth visit to the
community since 1983.
Symbolizing the broad in-
terest in Judaism, 22 men,
11 women and 11 children
were converted according to
Halachah in Havana recent-
ly by Rabbi Baruj Zeilicovich
of Bogota, Columbia, and
Rabbi Iejezkel Szteinhendler
of Guadalajara, Mexico.
"The intermarried couples
want to come back to
Judaism," said Mr. Lipsitz.
"The people are hungry but
they have high hopes they
will survive as Jews."
The American Jewish
Joint Distribution Com-
mittee pays for Rabbi
Zeilicovich's three- or four-
day visits to Havana ever
second month.
The JDC also funds tw.
madrichim (youth leaders)
from Argentina who have
organized a choir, dance
company and theater group
for Havana's Jewish teens.
