uslim Refugees
n Kibbutz

el Aviv (JTA) — The 84
osnian Muslim refugees
rought to Israel in a mercy
peration a month ago are to
e housed in Kibbutz Beit
en on Mount Carmel for
he remainder of their stay
re.
The refugees were first
upposed to have been
heltered by the Israeli Arab
'Rages of Tira and Umm el-
ahm.
But -Israeli Arab leaders
*thdrew their support for
he government's plan, after
aving first pressed for the
pportunity to rescue
uslim orphans from the
ighting in the former
ugoslavia.
The Palestine Liberation
ganization and other Pa-
estinian leaders had re-
ortedly pressured the
sraeli Arabs to withdraw
heir offer of aid for fear they
ould be helping boost
srael's public image and
aw attention away from
he conflict with the Palesti-
ans.
The Bosnian refugees were
lready on their way to
I srael, with the cooperation
f the French Jewish corn-
unity.
Under hastily arranged
rocedures worked out by
nvironment Minister Yossi
arid, of Meretz, the families
ere housed, upon their ar-
ival February 15, at the
field school of the Society for
he Protection of Nature in
srael.
Some of the refugees have
already been provided with
work with the Jewish Na-
tional Fund and on nature
conservation projects at the
nearby Ma'agan Michael na-
e reserve.
But under a new agree-
ment worked out over the
weekend between Sarid's
Environment Ministry,
which is dealing with the
refugees, and Kibbutz Beit
en, the Bosnian families
are to be housed in vacant
apartments at Beit Oren.
The kibbutz will also find
jobs for the refugees, while
the financially strapped kib-
butz will receive govern-
ent funds —probably via
the Environment Ministry
— for providing the families
with accommodation and
jobs.
Kibbutz secretary Dudik
Ruttenberg stressed,
owever, that the kibbutz
had agreed to take in the
refugees for humanitarian
reasons, and not just because
. of the economic considera-
tions.
