Israeli Mother
Kills Her Son

Tel Aviv (JTA) — A 27-year-
old Israeli woman shot her 9-
year-old son to death and
then tried to kill herself, but.
her gun apparently jammed.
The woman, Navah Cohen,
from Mazkeret Batya near
Rehovot, said she was plann-
ing to commit suicide and
killed her son because she
feared he would be abandon- .
ed by her present husband
after her death.
The son was from a
previous marriage. Mrs.
Cohen has two other chil-
dren with her current hus-
band.
Mrs. Cohen returned home
at about midnight from an
art class and dismissed a
\ baby sitter, police said.
• She then reportedly took a
pistol from a cupboard as her
husband was taking a
shower and entered her son's
room, placed a pillow over
his head and shot him to
death.
She then tried to shoot
herself through the head,
but the handgun jammed.
Alerted by the sound, her
husband rushed from the
shower, overpowered her
and called an ambulance
and police.
The couple's two other
/) young children slept
through the incident.
Mrs. Cohen was immedi-
ately taken into police
custody.
At a court hearing, Mrs.
Cohen's family said she had
> been hospitalized for depres-
sion previously, but they
thought she had recovered.
The court refused to allow
Mrs. Cohen to attend the fu-
neral of her slain son.
Mrs. Cohen's lawyer said
his client was mentally
disturbed and it was not cer-
tain whether she would ever
stand trial.
She is reported to have told
the police she was worried
that her son by her first
1\ marriage was not liked by
his stepfather and would be
abandoned by him if she
committed suicide.
Police said Mrs. Cohen's
first husband left her when
her baby was 1 year old. Her
two other children are
presently ages 5 and 3.
