ing, uncontrollable violence emanating from the
Gaza Strip, Israelis are increasingly seeking ways
of disengaging themselves from what one senior
military source described as "this unmanageable
hell-hole."

The scale of the problem was described by re-
spected Israeli military commentator Ze'ev Schiff
as "one of the most serious waves of ten-or in the
history of the state," a message that was reinforced
by Israeli police chief Ya'akov Terner, who con-
troversially advised Israelis to carry arms at all
times.
