Break the
Eyeglass Barrier

spected her family's beliefs.
Still, she constantly ques-
tioned the existence of God.
The Liptens spent a great
deal of time working to pro-
mote Reform Judaism, and
they became active locally in
the movement. They took
their three children to Tem-
ple Emanu-El in Oak Park,
but something was missing.
In 1977, they joined the
Birmingham Temple.
"Judaism is very impor-
tant to me," she says. "What
I found over the years was
that the stimulus I got was
in defining religion. I like the
intellectual stimulation of
Humanistic Judaism. For
me, being in a congregation
where other Jews also feel
the same way is spiritual."
The couple's beliefs mir-
rored those of Rabbi Wine.
Do for yourself, rather than
rely on others. Praying to
God will not make things
right for you. Intellect and
the power of reason should
guide you.

"Each person talks
about what
Passover means to
them."

Lori Lipten

Intellect and the power of
reason guide the family's an-
nual seders. But the power
of Dr. Lipten's late parents
also is a driving force. The
family combines traditional
Passover rituals — reading
the story of the Exodus,
drinking four cups of wine
and eating bitter herbs —
with a discussion on current
events.
Lori Lipten, Dr. Lipten's
32-year-old daughter, is con-
cerned about the resurgence
of anti-Semitism in Europe.
She hopes to discuss it next
week during the seder.
"Each person talks about
what Passover means to him
and how it relates to where
Jews are today," she says.
"(Following the rituals)
brings my mother's family
into her heart ... In Human-
istic Judaism, you don't prac-
tice a tradition unless it
means something to you.
There is more freedom for in-
terpretation. There is more
appreciation for human abil-
ity to reason, and there is an
expectation of human re-
silience and personal re-
sponsibility."
