hold the annual Holocaust
Memorial Academy and the
50th Anniversary of the
Warsaw Ghetto Uprising 1
la' .m. April 18 at the Maple-
Drake Jewish Community
Center. The annual
Academy is held in conjunc-
tion with the observance of
Yom Hashoah-Holocaust
Remembrance Day.
/ A candle lighting ceremo-
ny by the survivors of the
concentration camps and
ghettos will include chil-
dren and grandchildren of
survivors.
A candle will be lit in
}memory of the fallen heroes
of the Warsaw Ghetto,
Israeli fallen soldiers and
civilians, and in memory of
all deceased members of
Shaarit Haplaytah.

prayers, accompanied by

Yehuda Nir, professor of
psychiatry at Cornell
University and author of
Lost Childhood.
The Bravery Award will
be presented by Rabbi
Charles H. Rosenzveig to
Mrs. Janina Kohn-
Krajewska in recognition of
her bravery in saving her
child in the Warsaw Ghetto.
Memorial musical selec-
tions and recitations of
names of Holocaust victims
will be presented. Rabbi
Rosenzveig will deliver the
memorial address.

Survivors Group
Holds Elections

Shaarit Haplaytah of
Metropolitan Detroit held
elections recently. The fol-
lowing were elected: Harry
Praw, president; Nathan
Harris, Ann Olivek, vice
presidents; Simon Scharz-
berg, treasurer; Sol
Kleinman, financial secre-
tary; Miriam Slaim and
Rose Gutman, program
chairmen.

FREE Plans
Two Seders

Friends of Refugees of
Eastern Europe will host
seders April 5 and 6 at Con-
gregation Dovid Ben Nuchim.
The seders will be led by
Rabbi Yosef Mishulovin, and
will be assisted by rabbinical
students.
Chairman of the Passover
Campaign, Arthur Liss, and
Paul Magy, chairman of
Lubavitch Committee for
Soviet Jewry, ask the com-
munity to share the responsi-
bility of providing seders for
New Americans by contribut-
ing to this cause. Checks
should be made payable to

Discussion Group
Hears Speakers

Yesterday, Today and
Tomorrow, a discussion
group, will focus on off-
beat, interesting subjects
10:30 a.m. April 8 at the
Maple-Drake Jewish
Center. Elissa Berg, reli-
gious school director of
Temple Kol Ami, will dis-
cuss the stories behind
the Passover symbols.
Bernie Russ will speak
on "The Politics of
Energy" 10:30 a.m. April
22 at Maple-Drake.

Varani Concert
At Maple-Drake

The Julius Chajes Music
Fund Concert Series will
present Brazilian-born
pianist Flavio Varani in
concert, 3:30 p.m. April 18
at the Maple-Drake
Jewish Community Cen-
ter.
Mr. Varani began per-
forming as a soloist at the
age of 7. When he was 10,
he began touring with the:
Brazilian National
Symphony, a tradition
that continues up to the
present day. He is a
recitalist, chamber musi-
cian and guest artist with
leading orchestras in the
United States, Latin
America and Europe.
In the United States he
continued his studies with
Rosina Lhevinne at
Juilliard and with Artur
Balsam and Dora
Zaslaysky at the
Manhattan School of
Music, where he won the
Harold Bauer Award for
the most distinguished
pianist. Mr. Varani was
First Prize winner at the
Chopin International

Miracle Mission
Still Has Space

A few spaces remain on
the April 18-28 Michigan
Miracle Mission to Israel.
One of the highlights for
participants will be meet-
ing the citizens of Yavne,
sister city to the Detroit
Jewish community, when
hundreds of residents host
mission goers on the eve of
Yom Ha'atzmaut — Israel
Independence Day.
The nearly 1,300 mis-
sion goers, who will tour in
small groups during the 10
days of activities, will
observe the April 25
Israeli Independence Day
in a mass celebration,
hosted by Mayor Yehuda
Baros. Mission goers will
fly non-stop from Detroit
to Tel Aviv's Ben-Gurion

Airport, marking the first
time El Al jumbo jets have
landed at Metropolitan
Airport. The trip will
include deluxe hotel
accommodations, and.
sightseeing throughout
Israel will be in air-condi-
tioned buses.
The 10-day trip is spon-
sored by the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit in cooperation with
The Jewish News in cele-
bration of its 50th anniver-
sary, and by many congre-
gations and organizations
throughout the state.
