"Maybe some can't move without a wheelchair, and maybe they can no longer drive, but there is a great deal of work they can do," says JVS spokesperson Lin- da Remington. "There were no accidents with these peo- ple. In fact, it hasn't even been an issue at all." Rosemary Doyle, voca- tional counseling supervisor, has noticed a change for the better in attitudes among participating seniors. "They had nothing to do," Ms. Doyle says. "This has made a strong impact on their lives. This is the center of their week. They look for- ward to it." Many, like Sol Dembs, 72, who lost vision in one eye in 1985 and hasn't been able to drive since, finds his own rides for additional volunteer tasks to keep him busy throughout the week. He looks forward to his one day of work with the corps. "It's wonderful. You meet a lot of people," says Mr. Dembs, a retired builder who works through the corps at the JCC Cultural Arts De- partment. Those who remember Kid- die Center, which for years carried children's clothing at Greenfield and 10 Mile Road, probably remember Goldie Dunn, who worked there "forever" until she retired in 1982. Now she is selling Israeli bubble gum, mezuzot, Shab- bat candlesticks and other Judaica items at the JCC gift shop. She is part of the corps. For years she didn't do much at all. She traveled a bit. She lunched with friends, played cards. She visited with family, grandchildren. But it wasn't enough.
