from the basic tank and revealing bikini. The
more fashion forward can slip into retro swim
dresses and two-piece suits with fuller tops
and boy-cut legs. There are showy suits
loaded with decoration that will never go near
the water and others so clean-lined and effi-
cient they beg for Olympic competition. And
one-piece suits and swim tops are crossing
comfortably into street wear, paired with a
loose shirt or going solo over jeans, shorts
and skirts.
The lingerie bra-cup look that cutting-edge
designers pioneered several seasons ago is
now modified with rounder shapes, the in-
creased use of padding, and decorative touch-
es such as bows and ruffles. "It's a softer look
this season," says Roslyn Rock of Roslyn's In-
timate Apparel in Southfield.
The swim dress appears in every collec-
tion. Flirty skirts and halter tops pay retro
homage to the glamour of Marilyn Monroe
and Esther Williams. In fact, Williams' own
line of swimwear offers some of the most flir-
tatious, including her Hollywood-esque white

suit with gold trim. Other designs include
transparent chiffon skirts that reveal the up-
per leg but still give the illusion of a longer
line. Skirted cuts were once the favorite of old-
er women, but, as Rock notes, "It's a popu-
lar look for all figures."
The see-through looks of the couture run-
way collections carry over to swimwear with
mesh cutouts, laces, and sheers as insets and
panels. The extremely high cut of the French
bikini leg is coming down, and some of the
most forward looks actually look back to the
boy-cut leg of the earliest two-piece suits.
One of Rock's favorite swimwear design-
ers, Gottex, seemed inspired by the French
artist, Monet, who painted floral scenes. "Ifs
our number one line, and the vivid colors are
unbelievable."
