BILTMORE ESTATE COLLECTION George Washington Vanderbilt completed construction of the Bilt- more House in Asheville, North Carolina, in 1895. This 250-room es- tate is the largest private residence in America. The Vanderbilts fur- nished the home with exquisite art and antiques from around the world. From these original furnish- ings Drexel Heritage created the Biltmore Estate Collection. The ban- quet hall dining table was designed by Richard Morris Hunt, the Bilt- more House architect. The repro- duction incorporates the same mid-Victorian Gothic designs with carved column legs crafted in ma- hogany. The English dining chairs are an adaptation of an English Ro- coco antique found in the home. The mahogany cabinet emulated 8 • SPRING 1993 • STYLE the architectural carvings of the Austrian artist Karl Bitter, whose work appears in the home. "This is one of the most exciting reproduc- tion efforts in the furniture industry. The Vanderbilt family imported the original pieces over many years. It's an authentic reproduction of the masterpieces. We are happy to have them," says Bernie Moray, presi- dent of Gorman's.
