NIGHT

Forermly of Rosedale Park —A Detroit Tradition!

so moved by it all, and so it
will be fun to perform that
piece there.
"Also I'm excited because
we're going to take our son,
who will be there in the
year of his bar mitzvah."
As he travels to perform,
Mr. Goldsmith focuses on
the long-range effects of
each concert.
"We write this music to
be accessible," said the
sometime instructor at the
University of Southern
California.
"I think that makes this
music a great bridge to peo-
ple who have not been
acquainted with symphony
orchestras and the sym-
phonic repertoire.
"Young people tell me
that they bought records of
mine and were so fascinat-
ed with the symphonic
sound that they started
buying Beethoven and
Brahms and Debussy and
now they're avid concertgo-
ers.
"Symphonies are in such
desperate condition all over
the world, and I think peo-
ple have to be reminded
what it's like to go to a con-
cert and hear a real sym-
phony orchestra play.
"I think it's wonderful if
somehow this can get peo-
ple to go and all of a sudden
open their eyes and say,
"Wow, that's a symphony
orchestra. How exciting!
Let's go back for more.' " ❑
