hat do frozen yo-
gurt and coffee
have to do with
each other? . . . Ab-
solutely nothing . . . But did
you ever think that mixing
the two would someday
become a hot item?
It has . . . in a big way .. .
at "I Can't Believe It's
Yogurt" in Old Orchard
Plaza, Orchard Lake Road,
just south of Maple, opened
since May 28, 1989.
Owner Chuck Wolfson has
two operations. The other is
at Southfield and 13 Mile in
Country Corners (opened
August '88), but only West
Bloomfield has this unusual
concoction, with 16 flavors of
beans in stock from which
people can choose for their
mix.
This isn't all . . . Even
stranger is that a frozen
yogurt shop would also sell
coffee beans . . . all one brand,
Java Coast, that has become
part of the national "I Can't
Believe It's Yogurt" chain.
The 16 flavors of beans are
ground for folks who wish and
a machine even stands by to
make espresso coffee, cappuc-
cino and other blends with
frozen yogurt.
Chuck has always been big
on blending . . . loving to take
everything available and mix-
ing it together for strange but
delicious thigamajigs that
people request . . . He never
dreamed coffee would one day
become one of his biggest.
Can you imagine sitting at a
place like "I Can't Believe It's
Yogurt" and having a bagel
with cream cheese plus a cup
of fresh coffee or hot
chocolate, both ground on the
spot from beans?
This has happened . . . Peo-
ple can sit at six tables
seating 20 to enjoy the
favorite repast . . . When
warm weather comes, there
are also benches outside
where people can relax while
eating frozen yogurt . . . and
can now have their coffee too.
Little individual packets to
make a pot are also sold .. .
Along with grinders for those
do-it-yourselfers, mugs,
baskets, Biscotti dipping
cookies, etc.
Chuck is excited about the
various mixtures that can be
made . . . and revels in the
fact that this is something
other coffee operations cannot
do . . . the blending of frozen
yo.gurt with coffee of every im-
aginable flavor.
This doesn't by a long shot
mean that "I Can't Believe
It's Yogurt" at the Old Or-
chard Plaza isn't still a top
frozen yogurt spot . . . Plus
the regular oodles of flavors
for cones and cups, it is still
big on sugar-free frozen
yogurt products highly recom-
mended for folks losing
weight . . . Frozen yogurt pies
and cakes are made right
there and his delicacies are
seen at many communal
events . . . Its blended shakes
are noteworthy palate
pleasers, too.
Many bottles are displayed
that look like liquor con-
tainers . . . They are, however,
filled with various flavors
used in blending of frozen
yogurt. Throughout the coun-
try, there are about 400 "I
Can't Believe It's Yogurt"
stores . . . Depending on the
individual owners, most of
them will eventually have the
blending of frozen yogurt
with Java Coast coffee, in-
cluding decaffeinated varie-
ties and teas.
According to a survey,
American cosumers are in-
creasing their demand for
selections from which to
choose . . . Sales of gourmet
coffee beans have tripled in
the past six years and now ac-
count for 20 percent of all
home purchases . . . It is
estimated that by 1994,
gourmet coffee will make up
nearly one-third of all U.S.
coffee sales.
Variety coffees by "I Can't
Believe It's Yogurt" include
Java Coast's own Signature
Blend, made of selected Cen-
tral and South American
premium Arabicas beans,
with a mild taste and body
. . . Other flavored elections
include Irish cream, almond
amaretto, chocolate cherry
truffle, French vanilla, etc.
The premium Arabicas,
named from the original cof-
fee bean, are called "Milds,"
the highest grades used for
gourmet coffees . . . Arabicas
are grown at high elevations
and the beans develop slowly
at these altitudes, bringing a
more flavorful and aromatic
cup.
Getting right down to it,
blending frozen yogurt with
coffee is really nothing new
. . . Chuck Wolfson has
thought about it for years ..
What is new, though, is a
frozen yogurt place like his "I
Can't Believe It's Yogurt"
now selling gourmet coffee
beans by the pound at the Old
Orchard Plaza store.
The "Big Blender" himself,
as Chuck is sometimes called,
never thought he'd one day
also be selling bagels with
cream cheese and coffee .. .
Wonder if Chuck can blend
frozen yogurt with a bagel?
. . . Then again, why would he
want to?
EXPECTED DATE for
opening of the new Italian
restaurant Ciao) (chow, the
casual and friendly way of
saying hello in Italian) is
March 30 . . . It replaces the
former El Ibrito on Evergreen
south of Civic Center Drive,
and is another Mainstreet
Ventures operation (D. Den-
nison's, etc.) . . . It is slated to

be geared to a cuisine embrac-
ing all Italy, from the spicy
red sauces of the south to the
aromatic grilled foods of
Tuscany and the delicate
richness of Northern Italian
dishes . . . Ed Wagner is
manager.

participate in activities by
the Michigan Club of Delray

president, writes that MC
members may now sponsor a
friend, relative or neighbor to
join in the fun . . . "Our next
program" says Faye, "will be
a box lunch at the Patch Reef
Park in Boca where a celebra-
tion will be held in honor of

birthday. Cake on the house.
