Vandalized
Vancouver, British Colum-
bia (JTA) — Vandals tore out
pages referring to the Nazi
era in Germany from over 30
books in the University of
British Columbia's main
library. The material will
now be available for re-
stricted use only.
The damage estimated to
be about $10,000 includes
material relating to the
organization of the Nazi par-
ty, special military units
such as the SS and the SA,
insignias relating to the
Nazi party and the German
army and information on the
concentration camps and
war crimes.
"I think it's a very serious
incident and (the au-
thorities) should investigate
it fully to find out who did it
and what their motive was,"
said Renee Switzer Bellas,
chair of the Canadian Jew-
ish Congress, Pacific region.
"We certainly hope that
this was not done by some-
one who is involved in Holo-
caust denial," continued Ms.
Bellas, "because the truth is
that you can rip what ever
you want out of books but it
doesn't deny what happen-
ed."
Ms. Bellas urged the uni-
versity to increase security
at the library to prevent this
from happening again.
The mutilation was first
discovered several two
weeks ago by one of the
library's shelvers. Although
much of the material is out
of print, the library believes
it can still get photo copies to
replace it.
The vandalism occurred in
areas open to the public
where library cards are not
required. The library's ref-
erence division has since re-
stricted most of the material
on World War II. It put most
of the reference section on
the Nazi era into a protected
area.
This was not the first time
that the UBC library had
references to Nazi material
vandalized. Librarian Ruth
Patrick told the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency that in
October 1992 there was a
similar incident. A two-
volume encyclopedia of
World War II history had its
sections on Germany remov-
ed. At that time, the police
were not notified.
This time the police were
notified and Royal Canadian
Mounted Police Staff Sgt.
Bern Jansen said that "we
have some leads and are
pursuing the matter."
