With the new administration absorbed with domestic mat- ters, Mr. Clinton has been play- ing hard-to-get when foreign leaders come calling. But the Holocaust Museum ceremony — and the potent symbolism of a Polish head of state attending it — gave Mr. Walesa an edge in securing an Oval Office ses- sion. Mr. Walesa will join a lineup on April 22 that is expected to include Austrian, Portuguese, Czech and Israeli leaders. Blacks And Jews Stand Vigil For two decades, Jewish groups stood vigil in front of the Soviet embassy to remind the world of the Jews trapped in the USSR. A weekly anti-gun vigil mod- eled on the demonstration out- side the Soviet embassy started yesterday. To be held outside the headquarters of the Na- tional Rifle Association (NRA) for the next seven week, the new vigil is the product of a 20- year-old black-Jewish dialog group between black leaders in Washington and the local chap- ter of the American Jewish Committee. When black participants re- cently expressed a desire to do something about the surge of gun deaths in Washington, a Jewish participant suggested the NRA vigil. The last vigil will coincide with a major rally sponsored by the Citizens against Gun Vio- lence. Local synagogues are being paired with black churches to help generate a good turnout each week. "Even though people in the poorer sections of town tend to be the most affected by gun vi- olence," said local AJC director, Jeff Weintraub, "this is a prob- lem that affects us all. Violence doesn't know any boundaries. That's one reason Jews should get involved. And it's a good is- sue for African Americans and Jews to work on together." 0 1 DO YOU HAVE A BAR/BAT MITZVAH COMING SOON? LET TLC HANDLE YOU PARTY FAVOR NEEDS! Most here expect the cur- rent atmosphere of political instability to worsen as Mr. Yeltsin, seen here as the main bulwark against anti- democratic reaction, attemp- ts to neutralize the growing might of conservative forces in the Russian parliament, who last week stripped him of many of his presidential powers. But, for the moment at least, violence is seen as a remote possibility. The growing consensus is that there may be some sort of "democratic putsch." In this scenario, Mr. Yeltsin would impose direct presi- dential rule, possibly after rallying popular support in a nationwide referendum, supported by democratic elements of society and the armed forces. A conservative victory will raise the emigration ques- tion for many Jews.
