new baby and avoid phrases
like, "The baby doesn't look
Jewish" and "Too bad they
couldn't have a child of their
own."
Unfortunately, the book's
author and researchers say,
such basic guidance is still
needed. Too often a child's
biological parents are still re-
ferred to as "his real par-
ents," and the child himself
labeled, "the adopted son or
daughter."
"Adoption is not really well
understood by people in the
community," said Dr. Rosen-
feld, who illustrated the new
guide.
Mrs. McPherson already is
starting work on her second
guide, to be written for the
Hispanic Catholics. Future
books will cover black Protes-
tant families and the Chal-
dean community.
The entire team is now get-
ting ready for a May 6 event,
to be held in Lansing, when
the guide will first be circu-
lated. It will be distributed to
Michigan synagogues, Jewish
cultural and educational in-
stitutions and agencies.
Organizers say they antic-
ipate the guide also may be-
come available nationwide. ❑

Jews, Blacks
Fight Guns

Washington (JTA) — With
gun-related violence
reaching epidemic propor-
tions in the nation's capital,
Jews and African Americans
are joining forces to
heighten awareness of the
issue and support legislation
controlling access to guns.
Activists from the two
communities took part in a
gun control rally outside the
Washington headquarters of
the National Rifle Associ-
ation. Sponsored by the
Washington Black- Jewish
Dialogue, the rally was the
first in a series of eight such
demonstrations.
Organizers pointed out
that 66 people had been
killed in Washington since
the beginning of the year
and that 56 of the homicides
involved the use of a gun.
Known in recent years as
"the murder capital," Wash-
ington has received
worldwide attention for its
high homicide rate. But or-
ganizers of the rally em-
phasized that gun violence is
a nationwide concern.

The greatest pain is that
which you can't tell others.
Yiddish proverb

One nurse, two tents and ten acres of barren desert weren't the only things we started with in 1913.
We also had an unyielding commitment to providing compassionate care for those suffering
from serious illness. That was our driving force then and it remains so today, at City of Hope a
leading medical and research center whose legendary achievements continue to benefit thousands of
patients throughout the world each year.
One of the best ways you can support out progress is by participating in our Avenues of Giving
City
programs. With as little as $2,500, you can receive a guaranteed income for life and significant tax
of
savings. And best of all, a legacy of caring for your family and future generations.
