A page from the new 'Let's Celebrate Adoption!'

pressed interest in working
on other adoption issues. Mr.
Vander Velde considered the
new guides, looked at her,
"and I thought: what a
match."
Then came organizing the
advisory committees. Dr.
Rosenfeld had names; Mrs.
McPherson had names; oth-
ers involved on the project
had names. The list soon in-
cluded representatives from
throughout the state and an
array of adoptive parents, so-
cial workers, adult adoptees
and therapists. Among the
rabbis who served as advis-
ers: Rabbi Chaim Bergstein
of Bais Chabad of Farming-
ton Hills, Rabbi David Nelson
of Congregation Beth Shalom,
and Rabbi Lane Steinger of
Temple Emanu-El.
Members of the groups met
and discussed and debated
and reviewed the guide for
months. It was, Mrs. McPher-
son says, a "magical, almost
spiritual" experience.
For some, it meant reveal-
ing painful issues about their
own adoption, both personal
questions and problems deal-
ing with the system.
For others, it meant how to
contribute to a guide appro-
priate for Reform, Conserva-
tive and Orthodox Jews.
What impressed Mrs.
McPherson was the fact that
everyone clearly came with
his own religious peispectivo,
but each kept uppermost in

his mind the goal of how best
to help children.
A few of the participants
had their own question about
Mrs. McPherson: how could
she begin to understand the
issue if she isn't even Jewish?
But no one needed to tell
her what a brit is, or trans-
late tzedakah for her. Mrs.
McPherson's younger sister
converted to Judaism, which
gave the writer more than a
passing knowledge of the re-
ligion. Furthermore, Mrs.
McPherson spent hours re-
searching, including two
weeks "reading excerpts from
the Talmud. It became a pas-
sion for me."

Let's Celebrate Adoption

went through five rewrites,
and Mrs. McPherson, the
mother of four, estimates she
spent 70 hours simply writ-
ing the guide.
Dr. Rosenfeld said he feels
strongly that the result is an
informative, user-friendly
piece. "We didn't want this to
be something that just sat
around in a library and didn't
get used," he said.
The emphasis is on positive
aspects of adoption, and in-
cludes advice on how to cele-
brate the occasion and why
Jewish tradition stands so
strongly in support of adop-
tion.

ance for the community.
