M ARCH 26,
"One shouldn't underesti-
mate the danger of national-
ist activity," Mr. Bakhmin
said.
Aleksander Yanov, a pro-
fessor at the City University
of New York, described some
of the nationalist activity in
Moscow as similar to "Nazi
stormtroopers." He warned
of new fascist-style
movements springing up
among the nationalists, and
compared present-day
Moscow to Weimar Ger-
many. -
Mr. Yanov said, however,
that he felt the situation was
not "hopeless," in part be-
cause he believes Russian
leader Boris Yeltsin is still
more popular than his
rivals.
Two other witnesses
discussed anti-Semitic
tendencies found in the Rus-
sian Orthodox Church.
Sergei Lyosov, a professor
of religion at the Russian
State Humanities Univer-
sity, said in a prepared
statement that under the
current chaotic conditions in
Russia, "the racist anti-
Semitism of the nation-
alists and the deeply rooted
theological anti-Semitism of
the Russian Orthodox Chur-
ch can merge."
And Arkady Dubnov, a
journalist who directs the
Moscow bureau of the Union
of Councils for Soviet Jews,
said that one high-ranking
official in the church had
made comments supportive
of the ideas found in the an-
ti-Semitic treatise "The Pro-
tocols of the Elders of Zion."
Semyon Gluzman, director
of the Union of Councils'
Kiev bureau, gave a slightly
more upbeat presentation,
noting that the Ukrainian
government has been sur-
prisingly "philo-Semitic."
But, he added in a
prepared statement, "Jews
and democrats must always
be vigilant" against anti-
Semitic elements in Ukrai-
nian society.
