MYSTERY MUNCHER

writes . . . "Karl Kurz, owner
of the old Dakota Inn
Rathskeller on John R in
Detroit, says it seems like on-
ly yesterday, but it was 60
years ago this coming August
when his grandfather, Karl,
opened the doors of the
Dakota Inn to the public.
"Kurz has some big plans to
celebrate this anniversary. To
kick off the year-and-a-half
long celebration, Dakota Inn
threw a beach party in
January to chase away the
winter blues.

"Celebrants didn't go to the
beach but they wore summer
garb and sang beach songs at
Rathskeller. The next event
was Feb. 19 and 20 when a
Fasching party was held.
FaSching is the way Germans
get ready for Lent.
"Charlie Taylor is back at
the Dakota Inn piano stand
the second Thursday of each
month. Rathskeller is one
Detroit restaurant that has
stood the test of time and the
exodus to suburbia. If you like
potato pancakes, authentic
German artifacts and good,
old-fashioned service, give it
a try.
"A visit to Rathskeller is
like stepping back into the
past. The decor hasn't been
changed and neither has the
quality of food."

IT'S GREAT to be an

American and even greater to
appreciate the feeling . . .
Tamara and Eugene Fried-
man are among the lucky
ones who enjoy this.
They came to American
penniless from Russia 19
years ago and are ground-
kissing thankful for their
citizenship . . . This is why
Tamara, who owns Tamara
In-Thwn Spa on Northwestern
Highway, is such a believer
with Eugene in helping
others . . . Recently, she
hosted six teen-age girls from
one of the group homes pro-
vided by Orchards Children's
Service . . . The day's pro-
gram included a private skin
consultation, total skin care,
make-up applications, mani-
cures, bag of Tamara beauty
products and lunch by Matt
Brady's of Southfield.

Orchards, a community ,
based child welfare agency, is
the largest children's service
in Oakland County . . . "This
was truly a special day for
these girls," says Marcie Lip-
sitt, a volunteer represen-
tative of Orchards.
THERE'S LIVE blues
every night at Historic Holly
Hotel on Battle Alley in Hol-
ly, Mich. . . . Tuesday blues
sessions have a lot of people
going for some true blues, and
its comedy club is going great
guns, too . . . But why in the
world would anybody want to
commemorate the sinking of
the Titanic? . . . This is on tap,
April 15, for the hotel
restaurant.
SPANISH AND Latin
music and dance is this
weekend (March 26, 27, 28) by
Don Ricardo's on Telegraph
. . . including Flamenco,
tango, step-by-step dancing,
salsa, merengue and cha-cha
. . . Don Ricardo's is one of the
very few spots around with
authentic cuisine of Spain.
Galician fare is being
featured this weekend plus its
regular menu.
LOOKING BACK on col-
umns of yesteryears .. .
FEB. 20, 1946 . . . "Sol
Lewis, the _ handsome
personality-plus of the win-
dow display trade, looks back
on a time tabling that would
more than qualify as a Ripley
eye opener . . . Sol was in-
ducted into service, June 28,
1943 . . . landed in France on
his birthday, Nov. 28, 1944 .. .
and joined the 5th Division,
Dec. 28.
"He was wounded and cap-
tured at Luxemburg, Jan. 28,
1945 . . . Survived five
torurous days of marching
from one POW (prisoner of
war) camp to another and his
60th day of captivity was
marked on March 28 . . .
Following his rescue and anx-
ious journey home, Sol. final-
ly disembarked in New York
on April 28 . . His Purple
Heart came by mail and was
delivered Jan. 28, 1946 . . . ex-
actly one year from the day he
was wounded and captured.
"PS. . . He will be 28 years
old on his next birthday!
(Today, Sol is director of the
Michigan Hypnosis Institute
and the Michigan Meta-
physics Society.)
NOV. 21, 1975 . . . "Marion
Gould was told about her
7-year-old son, Richie, throw-
ing stones at a neighbor's boy
. . . 'Well, he started it was
Richie's reply to her question-
ing . . . Marion asked why he
didn't come and tell her in-
stead of throwing them back
. . . and little Richie
answered, 'What good would
it do to tell you? You couldn't
hit the side of a garage.' "
