Dr. Eugene Pious

Dr. Eugene I. Pious, 70, of
Birmingham, died March 20.
He was a thoracic surgeon
\---.nd professor of surgery and
anatomy at the Wayne State
University School of
Medicine. Dr. Pious volun-
teered to serve as a field
surgeon in Israel's 1948 War
of Independence. He served on
Jhe boards of the Michigan
(Heart Association and Zionist
c Organization of America.
Dr. Pious is survived by his

Melvin Swig

San Francisco (JTA) — Jewish
community leader, Demo-
cratic Party activist and
1 otelier Melvin Swig, 75, died
March 14..
Mr. Swig was a past presi-
dent of the San Francisco
) Jewish Community Federa-
tion and sat on the boards of
the American Jewish Joint
\ Distribution Committee,
Brandeis University and, at
the time of his death, nine
t other Jewish and civic
>organizations. He was also a
vice president of the Jewish
Telegraphic Agency.

tions such as State of Israel
Bonds, Mr. Swig was a pillar
of the San Francisco Jewish
and civic communities.
He had assisted organiza-

American Friends of Haifa
University to the University

Mr. Swig was chairman of
Swig Weiler & Dinner
Development Co., a family
real estate company whose
holdings included the Fair-
mont Hotel chain.

10 a.m. Tuesday for that
week's issue. They can be

Israel Begins
Glass Recylcing

Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
first project to collect" glass
bottles and jars for recycling
began on a six-month ex-
perimental basis in Ramat
Gan.
The town's Municipal
Council and Israeli Envi-
ronment Ministry have
distributed 15 large green-
and-white containers at
strategic points throughout
the town, in which residents
are being asked to deposit
the empty glass containers.
The program will grad-
ually be extended to cover
other towns in the Greater
Tel Aviv region.
The glass will be picked up
by the Amnir recycling com-
pany.
