xtremists
re Jailed
erlin (JTA) — A 31-year-old
ight-wing extremist has
een sentenced to five years
d nine months in prison
•r bombing a Holocaust
lemorial and a hostel for
sylum- seekers last August.
The bomber, Detlef Meyer,
onfessed to the crimes, say-
g he wanted "to set a sign
ainst Jews and foreigners,
o give them a fright."
Mr. Meyer's 36-year-old
ccomplice, Lutz Meining,
ceived two years and nine
onths for helping in the at-
cks.
Prosecutors had requested
enalties of six years and
hree years for Mr. Meyer
d Mr. Meining respectiVe-
. But no one was wounded
n the attacks, hence the
lightly reduced sentences.
The crimes, committed at
e height of a wave of anti :
oreigner and neo-Nazi
iolence in Germany last
ummer, attracted a great
eal of media attention
orldwide.
The Holocaust memorial
n Berlin's Putlitz Bridge
ommemorates the deporta-
un of Jews to Nazi concen-
ration camps. The bomb
aused considerable damage.
At the Berlin sentencing,
he court's chief judge
•lasted the two men for their
`extremely dangerous at-
cks" and said they se-
erely damaged Germany's
nterests, particularly by
urting the country's image
broad.
After confessing, the two
en expressed regret at
That they termed "an act of
tupidity."
The • fact that the attacks
ere directed against Jews
nd foreigners was a critical
actor contributing to the
stiff sentence.
Cost Of Living
Up In Israel
Tel Aviv (JTA) — Israel's
cost of living rose by 1.2 per-
cent during February, the
Central Bureau of Statistics
announced.
The rise nearly duplicated
January's 1.3 increase and
prompted grim auguries for
the future.
Economists predicted that
if the monthly index con-
tinues to increase by similar
amounts throughout the
year and the current decline
in the shekel-dollar
exchange rate is not re-
versed, inflation in 1993 will
return to a two-digit rate.
