so great that he decided
stand-up comedy was for
him.
"Once you get that taste of
being on stage and making
people laugh, there's a feel-
ing that is really difficult to
describe," said Mr. Berman,
who maintains that he is
afraid to talk in public, even
during synagogue services, •)
when he cannot be the funny
man.
As his career has pro-
gressed, he has revised his
routine, which is based on his
experiences and observations
with stories told through \'
characters he creates.
"I always try and change a
small percentage of my act
for each show, which means
1
trying out new material," he
explained. "If you take a look
at my show when it started,
it was vastly different from
what it is today, but it still
has the same format and
themes running throughout
it."
Adding drama to his
comedic career was a perfor-
mance during the Gulf War.
He entertained Marines at a
Patriot missile base.
"I had to be careful because
the Patriot missile base is one
place where you don't want
to bomb," he quipped.
Mr. Berman, who has
served with the Israel De-
fense Forces and has per-
formed in Hebrew for the
troops, believes that non-
Jews can appreciate his ma-
terial.
"My show has Jewish con-
tent, but I use a language and
approach that even a non-
Jew would be able to under-
stand," he said. "Of course, a
Jew would probably find it
funnier."
Besides comedy appear-
ances, Mr. Berman tries to
use humor as a way to pro-
mote religious observance.
For example, he made a 55-
minute video on intermar-
riage, Who Me? Couldn't Be,
which he sold to religious
high schools in the East.
"It's to teach kids about in-
termarriage, what it's all
about, and maybe to try and
raise the issues so they can
discuss it and hopefully pre-
vent it," said the entertainer,
