retary of state is carried

In New York, Alice
Harary, president of the
Council for the Rescue of
Syrian Jews, said that she
welcomed the "seriousness
with which Secretary Djere-
jian appeared to be following
up assurances given to the
Christopher mission concer-
ning future travel for Syrian
Jews."
Ms. Harary noted that Mr.
Djerejian "has consistently
demonstrated concern for
the plight of Syrian Jews,
from the time when he was
U.S. ambassador in
Damascus."
But she added that the
council is "also very con-
cerned about the failure of
the Assad government to
resume the issuance of exit
permits at the pre-October
rate."
Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Calif.,
pressed Mr. Djerejian on the
issue of Syria's remaining on
the list of countries suppor-
ting terrorism. He asked
whether Mr. Assad under-
stands "that Syria will re-
main on that list as long as it
continues to sponsor terror-
ism."
The State Department's
annual report on global ter-
rorism is due to be released
next month.
"I think our position is
abundantly clear in
Damascus," the assistant
secretary responded.
Mr. Djerejian said that the
United States has been
presenting Syria with "the
facts" about its support for
terrorism. But he acknowl-
edged, "We have not been
able to narrow the differ-
ences between us on that."
Mr. Lantos also asked
about reputed Syrian plans
to build a Scud missile pro-
duction plant. Mr. Djerejian
said he would answer the
question in private session.

Holocaust Soil
Buried At Museum

Washington (JTA) — In a
moving ceremony at the

still-incomplete U.S. Holo-
caust Memorial Museum,
soil from 39 Holocaust sites
was interred Feb. 22 in the
museum's Hall of Remem-
brance, where it will rest
beneath an eternal flame.
The hour-long soil dedica-
tion ceremony, attended by
several hundred people, in-
cluding Holocaust survivors
and U.S. military personnel,
is part of a series of events
leading up to the museum's
long-awaited opening April
26.
