evidence is not sufficient for
the Icelandic government to
act upon," said Foreign Min-
ister Jon Baldvin Han-
nibalsson, who also voiced
outrage at Israel for allow-
ing the Prime Minister's trip
to be interrupted. "I would
have taken the next
available cab to the airport
and left," he added, and im-
mediately cancelled his own
planned trip to Israel. Main-
stream media echoed his
concerns, while the Icelandic
Basketball Association
showed its support by mak-
ing Mikson the honorary
guest at the annual all-star
game.
As new evidence mounted
from Estonian, Swedish, and
Finnish archives, the
government established a
panel of lawyers for advice
on how to react to the
Wiesenthal Center's allega-
tions. The panel's report
concluded that the statute of
limitations had run out on
all alleged crimes except
murder, and that the
evidence was insufficient to
warrant an investigation. In
the meantime, the U.S.
Justice Department's Office
of Special Investigations put
Mikson on its "watch list" of
Nazi collaborators, barring
his entry into the U.S.
Angered by the panel's
conclusions and failure to
search for additional
evidence, Zuroff met in
December with Estonian of-
ficials, including Prime. Min-
ister Mart Laar, and gained
access to three files contain-
ing extensive evidence and
testimony from the 1961 in-
vestigation.
Mr. Zuroff delivered the
documents in Reykjavik
earlier this month. Although
Prime Minister Oddsson and
Justice Minister Throsteinn
Palsson refused to meet with
him, Public Prosecutor
Hallvardur Einvardsson ac-
cepted the documents for ex-
amination. His decision is
expected within a few weeks.
In a traditionally
parochial and chauvinistic
country, allegations of war
crimes against an aged, well-
known citizen are not
welcomed. The evidence •
made public so far leaves no
room for doubt that Mikson
participated in at least some
of the activities alleged, in
addition to having repeated-
ly made untrue statements
about his role during Ger-
man occupation of Estonia.
Icelandic intense discomfort
with the matter, however,
has found an outlet in
outrage towards Israel and
Jews in general.
