sublime in glorious deeds, do-
ing wonders" (Exodus 15:11).
It is not written here: Who
did wonders, but. . Who does
wonders. . . . He did and still
does wonders for us in every
generation. The awareness of
the wonder becomes part of
the religious consciousness of
the Jew as he expresses it in
the thanksgiving prayer
(Modim) of the daily Amidah:
"We thank Thee . -. . for Thy
miracles which are daily with
us, for Thy continual
marvels . ."
One has to keep his eyes
and ears open and be recep-
tive to the many wonders of
the daily life. "Replete is the
world with spiritual radiance,
replete with sublime and
marvelous secrets. But a
small hand held against the
eye hides it all" said the Ba'al
Shem Tov, founder of the
Chasidism. "All that man
sees" writes Shneur Zalman„
the founder of Chabad
Chasidim, in Tanya (1796, ch.
42) — • "sky, earth and its
fullness — are God's outer
garments, manifesting an in-
ner spirit, the, divine vital
elan which permeates them?'
There is no music, no love if
we take for granted the bless-
ings of the daily life. 'Where
there is great love -there are
always miracles..•Miracles
that rest not . so much upon
faces . or voices or 'healing
powers coming to us from far
away, but on our perceptions
being made finer, so that for
a moment our eyes can see
and our ears can hear what is
there about us always. Maybe
this is what Ben-Gurion
meant when he said: "In
Israel, in order to be a realist
you must believe in .
miracles?' 111
